The Year 1802

In 1802, the family of Schwarzenberg split into two family branches - the Krumlov-Hluboká branch and the Orlík branch. This was realised according to Ferdinand Wilhelm's testament from the year 1703. The testament contains the condition for the split - if at least two brothers in the major family line are born in one generation, then the family may split into two branches. This testament could be realised as late as in 1802, for the older son of Jan zu Schwarzenberg, Joseph zu Schwarzenberg, stood at the head of the Krumlov-Hluboká branch (primogeniture) and his younger brother Karel I. Filip zu Schwarzenberg founded the Orlík branch (second younger line). The residence of the older family branch was first Český Krumlov, then Hluboká later on.
