The Slavic site of a fortified settlement near Kuklov
There is the only known Early Middle Ages Slavic site of a fortified settlement "called U Ondřeje" in the region of Český Krumlov near Kuklov, in the east end Křemežská Valley Basin, approximately 2 km west of the village of Brloh (The Early Middle Ages Slavic Settlement in the region of Český Krumlov). The site of a fortified settlement in the area of 2 ha used to be situated on a low promontory between two brooks. There was a fortified acropolis with its highest point at the height of 636 m above the sea-level, two front castle sites fortified with the stone barrier and moat. The barrier is 2,5 m high in some places up to now.
The site of a fortified settlement near Kuklov has already been known since the beginning of the 20th century. It was described in detail by archaeologist Antonín Beneš in 1966. In 1968 working people (The National Museum in Prague) lead by J. Nedostupný did the research work of the site of a fortified settlement. They explored three probes altogether in the area of approximately 80 square metres. The remains of cultural layers and two objects in the shallow holes were uncovered. However, their original usage is uncertain. The archaeological excavations - mostly pottery fragments originate from other places of the settlement as well. Several hundreds of pottery fragments, a whorl, animal bones, pieces of burnt coal and a few pieces of fired clay were found during the research work. The discoveries are displayed in the National Museum in Prague.
The huge fortified settlement seems to have been founded in the second half of the 8th century or in the first half of the 9th century according to the pottery fragments and present knowledge of the South Bohemia pottery dating from the Early Middle Ages. Its function in the most southern part of Bohemia in the 8th century is not known. There are the signs of the fire which are very probable to prove strained extinction of the site of a fortified settlement near Kuklov in the half of the 9th century.
