Master of the Vyšší Brod altar

(around the second half of 14th century) Gothic painter

Vyšší Brod Altar, detail of portrait of Peter I. von Rosenberg Anonymous painter - this Master of the Vyšší Brod altar is one of the most significant representatives of Czech medieval creative art. This altar, dedicated to the Vyšší Brod monastery, was probably made on the order of Peter I. von Rosenberg. This wide-ranging altar cycle is a compilation of nine paintings that describe the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, the Christ on Olivet Hill, the Crucifixion, the Mourning over the Dead Christ, the Resurrection, the Assumption and the Descent of Holy Spirit. A few other paintings from the mid 14th century are also ascribed to the Master of the Vyšší Brod altar.
